Volkswagen is celebrating an iconic milestone at the 2025 Bremen Classic Motorshow—50 years of the Polo. The Polo, a compact car that has become a global success with over 20 million units sold, has been a benchmark in quality, innovation, and affordable mobility. To mark the anniversary, Volkswagen is showcasing two standout models from the first generation: a 1975 Polo L and a rare 1977 hill climb Polo.
The 1975 Polo L, featured in Oceanic Blue, represents the humble beginnings of the Polo. At just 3.50 meters long, this small, functional vehicle was designed for practicality. Powered by a 0.9-litre engine with 40 horsepower, the Polo L was light at only 685 kilograms, reaching a top speed of 132 km/h. It offered practicality with features like a large boot lid, a folding rear bench seat, and an impressive 900-litre capacity. Volkswagen’s “Small size. Large space” concept was embodied in this first generation, laying the foundation for a model that would evolve into a bestseller worldwide.
Alongside the Polo L, the 1977 hill climb Polo will take center stage at the event. This motorsport variant of the Polo is a testament to the model’s sporty DNA. The hill climb Polo, with a powerful 81 kW (110 PS) engine, was used as a race car for nearly 20 years. After a two-year restoration, it made its return to the track at the Osnabrück hill climb race in 2022. Sporting a wider body, lowered suspension, and a custom gear ratio, this special edition Polo, with a top speed of around 150 km/h, exemplifies the Polo’s versatility, capable of both everyday use and competitive motorsport.
Visitors to the Bremen Classic Motorshow, which takes place from January 31 to February 2, 2025, will have the chance to experience both of these historic Polos firsthand. Volkswagen will be showcasing these iconic models at Stand D08 in Hall 5, alongside other legendary brands from the Volkswagen Group, including Audi, Škoda, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer. The show is expected to draw over 50,000 visitors from across Europe, making it one of the most important events for classic vehicle enthusiasts.
